Programs

Whittier First Day offers a broad range of services designed to support individuals experiencing homelessness on their path to stability and independence. At the core of our work are our Interim Housing Programs, which include Ted’s Place in Whittier, the Hondo Center for Healing in Downey, the motel-based Pathway Home in Santa Fe Springs, and our newest site, the Midvale Tiny Home Village in West Los Angeles. These sites provide safe, service-rich environments that combine trauma-informed care, harm reduction strategies, and intensive case management to meet the diverse needs of our clients, including those with justice-involvement, chronic health conditions, and behavioral health challenges.

Our Access Center in Whittier serves as a vital entry point for individuals seeking support, offering essential services such as hygiene supplies, clothing, identification assistance, medical care through our PIH Health clinic, and employment readiness through onsite specialists. The cornerstone of the Access Center is our Access to Care Program, which helps participants overcome barriers to housing through rental assistance, clinical support, and workforce development, serving approximately 1,300 individuals annually.

To further address long-term stability, First Day also offers workforce development through the C.A.R.E. (Culinary Arts Resource Education) Program, launched in partnership with Kitchen To Go. This program trains individuals in culinary arts and provides real-world food service experience, supporting both personal growth and employment outcomes. Looking ahead, we are preparing to open a new 70-bed Transitional Age Youth (TAY) Housing Site in Norwalk in 2026, expanding our reach to younger populations at risk of chronic homelessness.

Together, these programs reflect First Day’s commitment to holistic, client-centered solutions that empower individuals to reclaim their lives and transition to permanent housing.
